Many of us love the winter weather – we build snowmen and sleigh ride when it snows and we go skiing. Then we go back inside for hot chocolate and to sit by a nice warm fire. But it isn’t that way for the animals that have to live their lives outdoors, enduring the elements every single day. You can help, though. A simple shelter can be made of a plastic bin with a removable lid, preferably in a dark color so it isn’t very noticable. Cut a hole large enough to fit a cat off-center and about 3 inches from the bottom. Spray it inside with ant spray and let it dry. Then fill it with hay, leaving enough room at the top and for the cats to get in and make a space for themselves. If possible, put some bricks or pieces of lumber underneath the bin so it isn’t laying on top of the ground. This way, you can easily clean it out every season and fill it with new hay.
